Want To Give One of Our Available Dogs a Forever Loving Home?
1. Review our adoption requirements. Note, puppies have additional requirements. Adoption Procedures
2. Review our very limited adoption area. Please be sure to read the definitions of adoption area boundaries. Our Adoption Area
3. Email us at info@citydogsrescue.org to request a visitation appointment.
A.) Please include your home address so that we can make sure you are within our adoption area.
B.) Please include the name of the dog or dogs you are interested in meeting.
C.) Please describe your family, including children and other pets.
D.) Please describe traits of a dog that you think would fit perfectly into your lifestyle and personality.
The more information you give us about your lifestyle and what you are looking for, the easier it is for us to match you
to perfect companion!
4. Once a visitation appointment is set up, please keep your appointment! We're 100% volunteer and while we're extremely
happy to introduce you to the dogs, we also have families. If you need to cancel, please email us as soon as possible.
5. To expedite the adoption process, please bring the following to your visitation appointment:
A.) Photocopy of the primary adopter's driver's license or state ID card (Photo ID with address listed)
B.) Proof of home ownership (Copy of deed/title, mortgage statement or property tax bill).
Please note: You can black-out monetary values. Utility bills are not adequate proof of home ownership.
-OR-
Copy of your lease and your landlord's contact information.
Please note: If your lease does not specifically address pets, we will need a written letter or lease admendment from
your landlord or management company.
C.) If you have other dogs at home you MUST bring or submit vaccination records for these pets, including rabies,
DHLPP/Duramune 5 (Distemper/Parvo combination) and Bordetella (kennel cough) before they can come and visit the
dog you are interested in adopting. If you have cats at home, we will need to see proof of current rabies vaccines.
6. After all household members have visited the dog you would like to adopt (household members do not have to visit at the
same time), we will give you an adoption application. The application can be filled out at the time of the visitation, or can
be emailed or faxed back to us anytime after the visitation.
A.) We evaluate applications in the order they are received.
B.) We accept up to 3 applications per dog before we stop setting up visitations for specific dogs.
7. We will process your application, which can take between 1-5 days. On average, your application will be processed
within 2 days. Keep in mind that your proof of home ownership or copy of your lease, as well as the copy of your photo
ID and any other additional documentation must be received within 24 hours of you submitting your application, or we
will move on to the next application.
8. After processing your application, we will contact you to set up a home visit. Home visits last between 30 minutes and
longer, and are designed to (A) teach you how to bring a new dog into your home and (B) to make sure your home is
adequate for a dog.
9. We do our best to provide home visits in a timely manner. If you are unavailable to set up a home visit within a
reasonable amount of time, we may move on to the next application. The primary adopter must be available for the
home visit. Other household members are welcome to be at the home visit, but not required.
10. In most cases you will find out if you are approved for adoption at the home visit. Otherwise, you will be notified
within 24 hours. After being approved for adoption, you have 24 hours to complete the adoption by:
A.) Reviewing and signing the adoption contract
B.) Paying the adoption fee (and any other associated fees due to customized adoptions or medical procedures)
C.) Receiving your training DVD, medical health records, vet care coupons and other adoption material
11. After finalizing the adoption you have within 24 hours to pick up your new companion.
A.) If you are unable to pick up your new pet within this time frame, boarding can be arranged. Fees apply.
12. After taking your new pet home, please take note that most adoptions have requirements that continue after you
have taken your pet home. This includes forwarding spay/neuter certificates, obedience training receipts and
graduation certificates, etc.
